Hemstitching

HEMSTITCHING

There are two movements involved in hemstitching and with practice it can be done quite quickly.

At the very beginning of the weaving, the very first weft shot, leave an end of weft three times the width of the warp hanging at the right selvage. Weave an inch or so and close the shed. Thread the hanging end of the yarn into a tapestry needle.1. Begin at the right selvage. Insert the needle from right to left under 6 warp ends. (This depends on the actual warp sett). Bring the needle forward to the surface two weft rows back, pulling the hemstitching thread taut. Continue across the width and fasten the end carefully into the left selvage.

2. Take the needle from left to right over the same warp ends then back diagonally from right to left under the same ends and up to the surface two weft rows back, pulling the hemstitchg tread taut. Continue across the width and fasten the end carefully into the left selvage.

The hemstitching thread may be the same size and color used in the weaving or it may be finer or a contrasting color depending on the taste of the weaver.

At the end of the weaving on the last weft shot, leave an end of weft three times the width of the warp at the right selvage. Follow Steps 1 and 2 as above. The only difference is that now the fringe will be ahead of you on the loom instead of behind your work as in the beginning.
